Buttons serve many functions. They fasten shirts, pants, and other items of clothing. Some people dont use buttons at all, seeing them as too militaristic. By pressing buttons, you can turn things on and off, and they enable the playing of video games. You can hit the "reset button," actually or metaphorically.

You can, if you wish, push someone's buttons, but beware the repercussions. Sometimes, you'd better better not push a button until you've read the instructions.
